Jennifer Lopez was born on July 24, 1970 to David, a computer operations specialist and Guadalupe, a kindergarten teacher in The Bronx, New York. She has two older sisters - Lynda and Leslie. Lynda is now a DJ for WKTU in New York (Lynda Lopez from 10 PM-2 AM) while Leslie is a music teacher.
Jennifer knew from an early age that she wanted to perform, and got her start in musical theatre. Lynda was also an actress, but her career pretty much came to a stop after appearing in the 1987 film The Rosary Murders. At the age of 16 Jennifer got her first break with a bit part in the film My Little Girl, but her big break came a few years later when she won a dance contest to become a "Fly Girl" for the Fox television series In Living Color. She used that experience as a springboard for her acting career, appearing as "Melinda Lopez" first in the short lived Second Chances series, then Hotel Malibu. In 1995 she jumped onto the big screen in her first major role, opposite Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson in Money Train. She would go on to work opposite such talents as Robin Williams and Jack Nicholson, but it was her work with director Gregory Nava, who directed her in My Family, Mi Familia, that would lead her to the role that would make her a star. After an extensive nationwide search, Jennifer was chosen to play Selena Quintanilla, in the official biopic of the life of the fallen Tejano star.
Taking part in the production of Selena would impact Jennifer's life in many ways. On the professional level, it brought back her interest in music and performing, and that led her to a recording contract. Her first CD, a pop album with a latin flavor, was released June 1, 1999. Working with the likes of Emilio Estefan, Rodney Jerkins and Sean "Puffy" Combs, the music world is buzzing that Jennifer is "the next Gloria Estefan" set to become the mainstream latin crossover star Selena herself surely would have been, had she been given the chance. That early prediction seems accurate, as her first single, "If You Had My Love" shot to #1 on the Billboard chart, and has been certified platinum (one million sales).

'If You Had My Love' Tops Hot 100 Singles, Hot 100 Singles Sales Charts 'No Me Ames' #1 on Hot Latin Tracks Chart
NEW YORK, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- ``If You Had My Love,'' the premiere single off
Jennifer Lopez's acclaimed debut album, ``On the 6,'' remains the #1 single on the Hot 100¡Ú Singles chart for the second week running, and #1 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart for the third week in a row.
Last week, ``If You Had My Love'' made history by landing in the #1 slot on the Hot 100, Hot 100 Singles Sales, and R&B Singles Sales charts simultaneously -- a feat previously accomplished only by Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and TLC. In addition, ``If You Had My Love'' became only the second song in Hot 100 Singles history to be #1 and be the greatest gainer in both sales and airplay (amazingly, another Sony Music Latin artist, Ricky Martin, was the first).
Jennifer's first Latin single, her duet with Marc Anthony, ``No Me Ames,'' has soared to #1 on this week's Hot Latin Tracks chart as well, providing the singer with a second consecutive week of three simultaneous #1 chart positions.
Video has also embraced Jennifer Lopez. The video for ``If You Had My Love'' has been Top 5 Most Played at MTV since it made its world premiere on May 17, and remains #1 on the ``MTV Jams Countdown.'' The video is also Top 10 Most Requested at MTV's ``Total Request Live,'' Top 5 Most Played at VH-1, Top 10 Most Requested at the Box, and Top 5 Most Played at BET.
Jennifer Lopez has also been a hit on network TV, with recent appearances on ``Late Night With David Letterman,'' ``The Rosie O'Donnell Show,'' and ``The Today Show.''
